This learning element is designed to explore the time period in American history of the Civil Rights Movement.  The novel that will be the core of the element is set in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963, and exposes students to this time period through the eyes of the 10 year old African American narrator, Kenny Watson.  This is a historical fiction novel that ends with the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, and addresses issues of predjudice and bullying, and lends itself to many areas of classroom discussion, as well as writing topics.

This program helps students to understand their emotions and ways of controlling them appropriately. This learning element is to be used for a boys group particularly for students in the year 7 and 8. This program should run 4 students to 1 facilitator, preferably a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 12. Each facilitator should attempt to case manage their particular group of students however all students should comfortable with all facilitators.
